DIY Placenta Encapsulation

People pay me to encapsulate their placentas. I love to do it and I believe in the benefits. However, it’s not a science! And it can be done easily at home. I think most people pay to have an encapsulation specialist process their placenta because it is time consuming and most new families don’t have that kind of time! But, in the hope that more people will try this amazing remedy, here is a step-by-step DIY guide to placenta encapsulation.

The first thing to know is that there are two main methods of encapsulation. The Traditional Chinese Medicine method (TCM) involves the extra step of steaming the placenta before dehydrating. The Raw method just involves dehydration. I’ll go through both here!

You will need:

Steamer and pot

Cutting board

Sharp knife

TCM herbs

Dehydrator (some use their oven on low heat)

Grinder (magic bullet works well)

Capsules

Optional but recommended: capsule machine (you can purchase on Amazon)

*Please note: This blog post is intended for new families who are interested in encapsulating their own placentas. If you have any blood borne pathogens, please be wary of using your personal kitchen equipment, as to not cross contaminate. If you are going to encapsulate someone else placenta, do not use your personal kitchen equipment (I would also recommend getting trained)!! You need to have special equipment for safety that is properly sanitized.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Method

1. Wash the placenta and remove the membranes and umbilical chord

2. Add herbs to the steamer water. I usually use lemon, ginger, hot peppers, and/or myrrh. Bring water to a boil

3. Place the placenta in steamer and steam each side for 10 minutes. Your placenta should look grey afterwards.

4. Cut the placenta into thin slices and place on dehydrator trays.

5. Dehydrate for 12-hours at 140 degree F or until the placenta is brittle and breaks easily.

6. Grind up the placenta pieces until you have a fine powder

7. Put that powder into capsules. This is the step where a capsule machine is extremely helpful, as capsules are very tiny! However, you can use a funnel made out of a rolled paper and carefully load each capsules. This will take a very long time, but it works!

8. Clean clean clean!

Raw Method

1. Wash the placenta and remove the membranes and umbilical chord.

2. Cut the placenta into thin slices and place on dehydrator trays.

3. Dehydrate for 18-hours at 115 degree F or until the placenta is brittle and breaks easily.

4. Grind up the placenta pieces until you have a fine powder

5. Put that powder into capsules. This is the step where a capsule machine is extremely helpful, as capsules are very tiny! However, you can use a funnel made out of a rolled paper and carefully load each capsules. This will take a very long time, but it works!

6. Clean clean clean!
